Just Let Timmy Smoke!
Tim Lincecum A.K.A. “The Freak” has become one of baseball’s biggest stars both on and off the field. Featuring a mid-nineties fastball, fueled by a leg kick that would make Bruce Lee jealous, this two time Cy Young Award winner has become something of a Rock Star. His October 2009 misdemeanor arrest for marijuana possession in Washington lead thousands of Giants fans to start the now famous chant “Let Timmy Smoke.” Rallying behind their superstar Giant’s fans sided with Lincecum’s belief that if it doesn’t affect his on the field performance there should be nothing wrong with him smoking marijuana. He later furthered this point by leading the Giants to their first World Series Championship since 1958 by earning two of their four victories.
In December, Sports Illustrated celebrated this Major League baseball All-Star with the cover of their yearend issue honoring the ten most memorable athletes of the 2010. This cover depicts Timmy in a tuxedo waiving a bottle of Champaign around. Adding to his rock star status, Timmy graced the front of GQ magazine two months later being recognized as one of the top 25 coolest athletes of all-time alongside other legends like Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Evel Knievel and Joe Namath.
During the 2010 title run Timmy was often interviewed with some pretty candid responses. He once replied to a question asked by a reporter screaming “Fuck yeah!” This, like everything Lincecum does, went viral on YouTube. When you add all this up, the “Freak” is just what baseball needed coming off the infamous steroid era which nearly ruined the game. He is fun to watch, root for and a poster boy for the common man. So Let Timmy Smoke and when it’s his day to take the mound, join us in Burnin’ with the “Freak.”
